Recently re-built Hunters Hut in Talež sits on the edge of Jelovica Plateau, a massive karst plateau covered with forest. You can see the plateau on your left when driving to Bled from the nearby town of Radovljica.
You may hike to the hut from Bled, Radovljica or the village of Kupljenik.
After around one hour of hiking you will be awarded with the view of the mountains and Lake Bled.

The hut in the middle of the forest
At Talež Hut you will experience the kind of atmosphere that one would usually witness at mountain huts lying higher up in the mountains. It is a pleasant atmosphere that warms your heart and makes you want to go hiking more often.
Next to the wooden hut that has indoor and outdoor seating, there is a viewpoint on the edge of the plateau. Jelovica – as the locals call the plateau – offers hiking and biking trails, and is home to some endangered species, including black grouse.
If you visit the hut during the opening hours, you can have a drink or a meal there. Try some typical dishes eaten in Slovenia such as mushroom soup, stuffed peppers, pork rib or rolled dumplings with cheese filling (sirovi štruklji). From 2018 on, it is even possible to book a room there.
You can get to Talež Hut either on foot or by bike. It is even possible to drive to the hut, but this article tells you how to reach the hut on foot.
Hiking from Selo Bridge to Talež Hut
In this article, I am describing the hiking trail that is the closest to Lake Bled. That trail starts near Ribno Bridge over the Sava Bohinjka River. (If you come by car, you can leave it at the parking area ahead of the bridge).
After crossing over Ribno Bridge, turn left (at the signposts pointing to both directions) and walk on a macadam road (that goes further to the village of Bodešče) for about five minutes.
Soon you will see a signpost saying ‘Talež’ on your right and a hiking trail going up into the forest. Turn right onto that hiking trail.
The trail in the forest is wide. It becomes quite steep after 15 minutes of hiking and gets gentler on the top. I usually take trekking poles with me as they make walking down the steeper parts easier.
Walking up the hiking trail that lies mostly in shade, you will have the forest on both sides. At the beginning of the trail you will pass by a Scouts camp which operates since 1984. It is a lively place during summer when children have school holidays.
Further up the trail you will find a wooden cross (typical Catholic shrine) on the left and a Partisan memorial on the right side (Partisans were members of a military group that formed during the Second World War).
If you start your hike at Selo Bridge, you will reach the hut after around one hour of hiking. There is quite some life going on around Talež Hut, especially if the weather is good.
Do not miss traditional events at Talež Hut
On the evening of the 30th of April, they light a bonfire at Talež which is an old tradition in Slovenia. The bonfires that you can also see on other hills on that evening are associated with Workers’ Day that is being observed on the 1st of May each year.
There is another traditional event that takes place three months after lighting the bonfire. Talež is popular among mountain runners. If you are one of them, you can participate in Taležlauf (‘TaležRun’) that happens in August.
The running trail that starts near Ribno Bridge is around eight kilometres (five miles) long. It ends in front of Talež Hut.
Whether you are a mountain runner, non-extreme hiker or a regular lover of nature like me, you will most probably enjoy a moderate one-hour hike to Talež. When on the top, you can take panoramic photos of Lake Bled with mountains in the background.
